An eye for an eye: In 1780 the British were defeated by the Spanish in a battle at El Castillo on the Rio San Juan, Nicaragua in which a youthful Horatio Nelson lost an eye. Later in years Nelson went on to become the famed Lord Admiral of the British Navy.

Planting for the future: Almost half of Nicaragua’s 4.5 million people still live in the countryside, working on farms or growing their own food on small plots of land.

Common tongue: The Creole community identifies closely with the English-speaking Caribbean and is concentrated along the coast around Puerto Cabezas, Blue Fields and the Corn Islands.
